Introduction to My Ever-Changing Life

My name is Ashlyn Colbert. I am from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

My family is very important to me! Here I am at my brother's football game with my mom and sister!

My labradoodle, Cali, is also very important to me!

I spent my freshman year of college at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California as I believed that I would be better suited at a smaller university. Unsatisfied with my experience there, I decided to try the University of Oklahoma during the fall of my sophomore year and I could not be more content or surprised by how much I love it here!

I especially missed OU football when in California!

I just recently changed my major from Human Resources Management to Accounting and am highly considering Price College of Business' 5-year BBA/MAcc Program. My favorite class that I took last semester was Managerial Accounting, simply because accounting is something I just recently developed a liking to! My biggest accomplishment last semester would have to be getting more involved on campus: I joined an academic fraternity where I served as Service Chair and became Fundraising Chair and also interned for an environmental sustainability non-profit. Even though I had many friends here already and made many new ones, it was still hard for me to get involved on campus just coming in as a transfer there aren't a lot of (obvious) opportunities. I had a very exciting winter break filled with family and friends! After being in Mexico for almost two weeks (see My Favorite Place post), I had a chance to spend a week in Crested Butte, Colorado skiing with friends.

Skiing in Crested Butte (I'm the one in pink pants)!

I am currently about half way through my training to become a yoga teacher. This weekend I actually have a two day intensive! I have grown to love yoga, especially hot yoga. I have embarked on this training to merely learn more about something I love, not to necessarily teach yoga... but who knows! Because of my passion for yoga, I hope to one day travel to India, so this is one more reason that I am very excited for this class. Finally, I consider volunteering and travel to be my two most favorite hobbies. I have been fortunate enough to have many opportunities to combine these two things in places around the United States as well as in Italy, Haiti, Belize, Tanzania, and Mexico.

While in Tanzania, my dad and I also hiked Mount Kilimanjaro!

Community service is something I really enjoy and hope to someday incorporate into my career, whatever that may be.

  1. Nice to "meet" you, Ashlyn! That's amazing that you've traveled to so many different countries AND you hiked Mount Kilimanjaro. Do you speak any foreign languages?
Also, props to you for taking intensive classes for yoga. I took yoga for a semester, and it was a lot more challenging that I expected so I have major respect for yoga enthusiasts.

  2. Hello Ashlyn. I am very impressed with the amount of traveling that you have done. All of your adventures look like so much fun and I cannot even imagine what Mount Kilimanjaro was like! It's great to see that you are so involved on campus and I think it is just amazing that you like to do so much volunteer work. We need more people with big hearts like you!

  3. It is so cool that you are interested in yoga, Ashlyn! That is one of the most famous gifts of India to the rest of the world, and it goes back to ancient times in India, just like the epics. Are you thinking about doing a yoga project for the class? That could be so great! I don't know if you looked at this Storybook yet or not, but it's a collection of yoga poses with the stories that go with them; everybody in class that semester got to learn about yoga thanks to this project: IE Yoga Studios: Pose Origins Workshop

  4. Hi Ashlyn! First, I am also an accountant and understand the big decision of either going for the BBA/MAcc program or finishing at four years. I would make sure you have all the facts about both programs and then pick the one that is best suited for you! Second, It is awesome that you are going to be a yoga teacher. I love yoga!

    Nice to meet you!

You have experienced many cool opportunities, and hiking Mt. Kilimanjaro...wow!! That is on my bucket list. I have a few friends who participate and yoga, and love it to the point they post pictures of themselves in the scorpion pose with their arms on the floor studying. Yeah!! I wish you the best!!

  6. Hey!

Fun Fact, I have actually never been to a full football game. I tried once but it was raining so we left early.

It is awesome you you went to Tanzania! I went I have been to Europe and Central America. Not Africa, that sounds really awesome!

I have been skiing once, it was a lot of fun!! I went to Colorado, to Wolf Creek, where I got the worst sunburn of my life though!

    I was nice meeting you!!

  7. Hey Ashyln. I am glad that you are liking the university. I am also a transfer student and I am trying to settle here in university too. I want to wish you all the best for your upcoming days. I have a huge interest in yoga and I am excited for you. I love how you have more than one picture.

  8. Wow, you lead such an interesting lifestyle, Ashlyn!

Totally surprised me when you went from talking about accounting to yoga! My mom is an accountant actually, she owns her own CPA practice and has many small businesses as clients. She seems to like it alright :P

I'm pretty flexible, and throw in a few stretches here and there in my morning routine, but have never gotten as into yoga as I'd like to. It'll be interesting to see how yoga is incorporated into the epics we'll read, or how you'll incorporate it into your stories. Can't wait to read you storytelling post for this week!,

  9. Ashlyn, I enjoyed reading your introduction and it looks like you have gotten to experience a lot of amazing things. I found it really cool that you were able to hike Mount Kilimanjaro. I hope you are able to incorporate volunteering into your career later on in life because many will not be able to. The earth needs more people like that. Thanks for posting.

  11. Hi Ashlyn,

I enjoyed reading your introduction. Thanks for sharing your photos. You and your family have been to some very cool places. Wow, you hiked Mount Kilimanjaro! You should have no problem incorporating Epics into your storytelling. That’s great you spend time volunteering. It is very rewarding. It seems like you are very focus and you have a plan. I look forward to reading your blog this semester.

  12. Hello, Ashlyn,

The first thing that caught my attention about your introduction was your adorable dog! She (he?) is sooooo cute! I love dogs, and I think labradoodles are particularly adorable.

I’m so glad you like OU! I had a very similar experience my freshman year. I desperately wanted to go out of state for college, so I started out at Colorado State University. I ended up not liking the school itself at all (being in Colorado was great!), so I came back to OU halfway through. I am sooo much happier here! The psychology program is much better, and I’m no longer paying out of state tuition for a degree that didn’t seem worth it.

It was so nice getting to know you, and I hope you have a fantastic semester! Good luck with the accounting!

  14. Hey Ashlyn,

So nice to meet you! I too am from the metro area. I'm so jealous that you were able to spend a year out in Cali for school, must have been nice! Accounting is a great major and one that will always need workers. A lot of my friends are in the accounting/finance majors. That is so cool that you volunteer for an environmental sustainability organization. I think that we the people can impact the environment positively if we work together. That's so great you have such a passion for yoga. I have been considered trying yoga, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Good luck this semester Ashlyn!

  15. Hi Ashlyn,
Just doing some extra credit blog comments. I haven’t seen your blog yet and it is well designed. I also finished reading your introduction and it was nice to learn more about you. That’s awesome that you are into accounting, which is a really hard major at OU from what I have heard. I hope the best for you in the next couple of years. It is awesome that you have traveled so much. I am actually starting to travel more myself and it is awesome to see other places. Well Good luck the rest of the semester!

  16. Hi Ashlyn,

I am just back to check in again. Now that the class is drawing to a close, I was wondering how liked it. I felt that I learned quite a bit and my writing definitely got a little better. I bet you have some big plans to travel after finals are over. Also, did you ever finish your yoga training?

  17. Nice to meet you Ashlyn! I’m surprised I a haven’t already meet everyone in this class but I’m glad I got a chance to read a little about you. I am from Orange County CA so I am familiar with Pepperdine, that is really neat you went there freshmen year. It is very different then OU though, doesn’t quite compare to OU football haha. Good luck finishing up the rest of the school year!
